The plot was fun but pretty dark! There was much more pain, death, and betrayal than I was prepared for when I started this book, but it did give it a realistic feeling. I loved how this book considered how different sexualities and perspectives were impacted by Cinderella, the ball, and the expectations of society. This story was gorgeous and captivating, and I enjoyed reading it. What an exciting, clever book! I loved that this book was a blend of dark, fantasy elements mixed with real issues such as equality, sexuality, and human rights. Torn between trying to flee the ball and honoring her parents, Sophia accidentally uncovers the truth behind the Cinderella story- a mystery that will shake the world around her. When it’s Sophia’s turn to attend the ball, she is angry because she would rather marry her best friend, Erin. This ball is the most important part of a woman’s life, along with obeying her husband and taking care of the house. Although Cinderella’s fairytale ended 200 years ago, the King still forces girls to attend an annual ball where men select their wives.
